steel city blues
it was grim. ashby gave the steel city saloon three and a half hats. he was three off. meatloaf sandwich, small piece of meat stuffed with mashed stuff on top of texas toast. toast was dry and gravy was standard mccormicks. horseradish slaw, ok at best. turkey wrap..arid..like a mexican meadow muffin. cod sandwich low rating..cod fine..bun of historic origin. fries got high marks. but who pays 8 bucks for fries? chicken salad wrap was the best received lunch item. i guess it wasn't foul. booth seat had the lunch dates sliding into the table or propped up on elbows. keep your elbows off the table and you could be under the table. i sat side-saddle and was fine. if this is pittsburgh come to tallahassee, as ashby implies, a whole city got run out of a state. gonna screw-up mapquest...sadly we found it...gonna rename it...steal city...got 50 bucks from us for the first and last time. i think i will file a claim with the crime victim's trust fund...

FRESH MEAT FOR THE 5 OR 6 FOLKS WHO MISSED THE BLOG
so ashby stiff, the restaurant shill for the tallahassee democrat, gives coolgrindz on park three and a half hats out of five. calling him a shill might be too kind. he can't even bring himself to totally dis the furniture: "not La-Z-Boy comfortable, these chairs, but definitely show-stoppers." the truth--sitting on these chairs is like spending time with a 400 pound hooker--about 15 seconds worth is all you can tolerate. wb and i went to lunch there last friday. the high point was wb huggin and kissin on all the fair lassies in the joint. he'll go back for the affection. i won't be his witness. he will just have to tell me about it. i ordered a cuban steak sandwich which comes with a cup of black bean soup. there was about an ounce of steak on the sandwich and the cup of soup was served in a vessel that was a cross between a thimble and a demitasse cup. it did not come with a spoon, and with good reason, it could have been snorted. if my rating system was based on stools, i couldn't give coolgrindz half a stool even if i wanted, if you get my drift. you want the best cuban steak sandwich and the best fries, go to gordo's on west pensacola st. you will get a steak that is tasty and the size of a football bladder. you can share the fries with five of your friends and settle-up for less than the mini-meal at coolgrindz. oh and did i mention--at gordo's you get to sit on hard wood chairs--far more fanny friendly than the "Indian silver--velvet seated" butt numbing instruments of torture at ashby's new favorite place downtown.

CABO'S-DINE AND DASH 6-5-05
friday, 5-20-05, 6pm. stroll into cabo's with the sizzlin miss amy. as usual, mjm and lady j are already seated. can't figure out what has made him so prompt. retirement and being on time is his life? lady j and now he has a life? they are in a booth against the mid-south wall. cabo's has sure grown up. when it first opened, i don't think it had a mid-south wall. as i recall, the door was the south wall. it had about six seats. no room for a booth, in a place that was the size of a dilbert cubicle. moved into the old peanut barrel. expanded that space. moved the smoky bar into a defunct smoothie parlor. vast improvements all around. cabo's was a 2-14-97 stop on the giant bag's farewell tour. something for everyone would be the best way to describe the menu and the customers. fries and salsa are always worth a stop. the wait staff are quick and cheerful. some have been at cabo's forever. one of our favorites has gone into the permanent make-up business at a salon on thomasville road. her name is amy--she has gotta be good.
no time to dally. kicking and screaming starts at 7:20. well not quite. there will be ads, movie trivia, coming attractions, a coke movie, a cell phone movie and a final admonition to enjoy the show. still, like to arrive on time, get a good seat and complain that the movie never starts on time. stiff drinks for the folks across the table. soft drink for blog-boy. freshly brewed, but weak, decaf for sizzlin-sweet. chips and salsa to snack on while the cook prepares dinner for four. red snapper, a lite meal of beef and plants, shrimp with angel hair pasta and a #5 vegetarian mexican platter. i did not fib about something for everyone. the snapper and the #5 get the best marks from this evenings panel of judges. miss amy prefers the shrimp alfredo when it is on the special board. lady j was too much a lady to say much about her lite meal. dining tip of the day---if you have a choice of lite or heavy, go heavy. you can always eat lite and if the food is good, you can share with your tablemates or take it home. if you order lite and you are hungry, you look goofy if you order a second meal or start swiping other folks food when the conversation heats up. following a diet in a restaurant has a big cost benefit to the restaurateur but none to the dieter. unless you can place an economic price on having a srong will in the face of food that demands to be devoured.
the 7:20 moving picture show starts about ten minutes before i would normally be saying "goodnight sweet princess". the kids on the soccer team were well worth the entry fee. they almost made me forget the pre-feature crapola. dinner and a movie and we beat our dawn curfew with minutes to spare......
